Branding & design tips that keep your brand consistent
Updated
These branding tips for small business cover common branding mistakes and practical brand consistency tips. The Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign habits below help teams create stronger logo design, consistent product photos and reliable print-ready files.
Illustrator
1.Design vectors for the smallest use first
Build logos and icon systems for a favicon, app icon or small sign first. If a vector holds up when tiny, it holds up everywhere else too.
2.Keep one master swatch library per brand
Save Pantone, CMYK and RGB values together so colour never drifts between a print piece and a digital post.
3.Save recurring brand elements as shared assets
Keep logo lockups, icons and patterns as symbols or in a shared library file. A whole design team can stay consistent without redrawing from scratch.
4.Prepare print files from day one
Set up bleed and trim guides and proof in CMYK on packaging or anything bound for print. Catching a colour or cut issue after printing is expensive and slow to fix.
5.Leave text live until the file is final
Do not outline text too early. Live text keeps revisions and second-language versions fast instead of forcing a rebuild.
Photoshop
6.Work non-destructively
Use adjustment layers, layer masks and smart objects instead of flattening early, so retouching survives multiple rounds of feedback.
7.Build one consistent retouching preset
Use one colour grade per shoot or product line so every image reads as one campaign, not a patchwork.
8.Choose resolution and colour mode before starting
Decide between 300dpi CMYK and 72dpi RGB based on where the image will actually appear.
9.Automate repetitive exports
Use actions or batch processing to resize and export one image into several social formats instead of doing each by hand.
10.Keep layered files organised
Use clear file and layer names by client and version. With dozens of pieces in revision, an untidy file is where mistakes slip in.
InDesign
11.Set up master pages and text styles first
Create master pages and paragraph and character styles before laying out a page. This makes a multi-page catalogue, report or proposal faster to update later.
12.Keep images linked, not embedded
Use a clean folder structure. This matters even more on bilingual English and Arabic documents, where a right-to-left layout variant depends on tidy links.
13.Build a template library
Save recurring flyers, invitation cards and proposal covers. A repeat request becomes a five-minute job instead of a redesign.
14.Package files before handoff
Use File > Package before sending work to print or another designer. It bundles fonts and linked images so nothing goes missing.
15.Use real client copy early
A layout that looks perfect with placeholder text can break when the real word count arrives. Add the actual copy as early as possible.
